General Informations

Our Association was founded in the year 2008 and we are a recognized Non-Profit Organization. The members of the association are of all ages and life situations, united in spirit and will to help poor people in North-East India to get access to education and thus be able to live a life of independence and self determination.

Worldwide, there are millions of people not being able to visit a school, to qualify themselves, to realize their dreams or even just to find a daily job to earn enough money to enable themselves and their families to live a life under human conditions. There is a lack of buildings, there is a lack of equipment, there is a lack of teachers, books, exercise books, pencils etc,. Briefly; There is a lack of everything.

People in most of the industrialized countries were born in societies in which all these things are natural; but there are others who did not have this chance. Through no fault of their own, they are often burdened from birth onwards with a disadvantaged and uncomfortable situation. Without the help of others, many of these people are hardly capable of  getting out of this weary life situation on their own.

The “Bildungshilfe Nordost-Indien” therefore decided to extend its  helping hand. Unfortunately, we are only a very small association, thus we will not be able to support all the people who are in need of  outward help and deserve it. Therefore, we decided to concentrate our work on just one project.

The aim of the “Bildungshilfe Nordost-Indien” is to assist in the extension of an already existing hostel in Dibrugarh, Assam, India, which  now provides hostel facilities to 48 college going students and increase it to 100 accommodations in the future. The hostel is owned and managed  by the Salesians of Don Bosco, who are the local partners of our association.

Though, this is only a very small contribution, in the face of numerous problems the  poor countries and their inhabitants face, it is at least one first step, to enable every year about 100 young people to be educated, and thus have a real chance to lead an independent and self –determined life.

Suggestions for the organizations mode of operation

The executive committee has formulated a few guidelines for the work done by the "Bildungshilfe Nordost-Indien", to provide all members and those interested insight into the organizations mode of operation. Although the executive committee already adopts these fundamentals for guidance, all members should be able to identify themselves with the principles, methods and activities of the organization.

The following presentation of the Bildungshilfe self-conception should be seen as suggestions for general working methods which volunteers and committee members can use as a benchmark rather than rigid rules and regulations. At the same time criticism, new suggestions and ideas are always welcome and the committee will listen openly, discuss them and familiarize themselves with them.

A small part of the whole thing.

The "Bildungshilfe Nordost-Indien" sees its main field of activity in the area of development politics. As we see it, development politics are a big issue to which we should like to make a contribution. Rather than seeing ourselves as competitors, we seek partnership and co-operation with other organizations focusing on similar topics. The aim should be to profit from others experience and attempting to bring about something jointly.

The "Bildungshilfe Nordost-Indien" has decided to limit its main activities topically to education and regionally to Indias North East. Nevertheless, we consider work done in other parts of the earth (E.g. Africa, South America and other parts of India and Asia etc.) concerning development politics and with focus on other items (Civil rights, health care, agriculture, development of infrastructure etc.) equally important, necessary and sensible.

The "Bildungshilfe" addresses itself as a supplemental platform to people who would like to help or fund but feel unsettled due to negative press, lack of information or absence of personal contact and who do not know who they can support. We should like to offer an alternative to fill this gap.

Maximal transparency for the circle of supporters.

Our work should be as transparent as possible so that information can be imparted clearly and comprehensibly to all interested parties, volunteer workers, donors, members and other supporters. This is why the "Bildungshilfe" only supports a limited number of projects. This enables us to provide updates on the latest developments of our work. The aim being to supply precise information as to which projects find our support, to what extent and why. Every supporter should be able to inform himself about where his resources are flowing and how they are being put to use locally before committing himself. In this spirit we limit our work presently to one central project: the development of the Bishop Marengo College Hostel in Dibrugarh.

Convincing by factual information rather than emotional manipulation.

The executive committee of the "Bildungshilfe" has decided to do without emotional advertising when campaigning for contributions. We would like to draw attention to the situation in India and to other topics of development politics by communicating factual information and background reports. Presenting realistic, neutral and comprehensible fact stands in the foreground. It is not our aim to distract the attention of our prospective supports from our overall project by instigating emotional manipulation through high-profile pictures and texts that attract a lot of media attention.

Stirring interest rather than aggressive advertising.

One main focus of the "Bildungshilfe" attention is reprocessing and mapping out questions concerning development politics. Of course in this sense attention should also be drawn to the organization and its activities. Although we reject aggressive advertising campaigns for this purpose. To this we include sending informative literature to private households and confronting people on the street.

Instead information material (such as this newspaper, handouts, flyers etc.) should be distributed in public places (such as cafes or hairdressers) or at public events (Theatre, Information evenings etc.). Anyone interested can then read through the material at leisure and form an opinion without pressure. Furthermore we intend offering informative meetings such as film evenings, slide shows etc. In addition the latest news on current projects and work in progress can be obtained from the organizations homepage (www.bildungshilfe-nordost-indien.de)

A forum for development politics.

The aim is not only to gain the support of new supports and voluntary helpers but to ensure their involvement in the life of the organization. Every person has a different amount of time, skills, talents and interests. Our wish is then to match the commitment of each voluntary helper to their personal and temporal possibilities.

Ranging from volunteer work in one of our task forces, or compiling articles for the "Bildungshilfe Magazin", from one off donations or pointing out comma and grammatical mistakes on our homepage, we look forwards to all kinds of interest and every support in our work. The "Bildungshilfe Nordost-Indien" would like to be a forum for people who, like us, take an interest in questions of development politics and with us would like to broaden their knowledge and get involved.

Learning from local partners.

A major element of our concept is the relationship with our local partners. In our view our task is not to instruct and patronize. We are convinced that local people know best where shortcomings occur and how best to rectify them effectively. For this reason we see our job in selecting trustworthy, competent and reliable local partners. The aim is to find out more about the local conditions, to learn and discuss problems and solution factors as well as preparing concepts and implementing them jointly.

With this working concept, we as an executive committee, hope to meet with the approval of as many members and interested parties as possible. At this point we would like to thank all members, friends, sponsors and especially the volunteer workers for their support up to now and the confidence they have placed in us.
