On this link, we would like to give you some more informations about our recent project, the extension of the Bishop Marengo College Hostel in Dibrugarh.

The town of Dibrugarh is situated on the banks of one of the great Indian rivers called Brahamaputra. The town has many educational institutions run by the government of India and also some private persons.

Due to the availability of institutions for higher learning, the Don Bosco fathers thought it fit to start a hostel which would provide safe, secure and affordable accommodation for the students coming from low economic background. Bishop Marengo College Hostel, Dibrugarh, the foundation stone of which was laid on 29th March 1999 was inaugurated on 7th August 1999. It is named after an Italian Salesian Priest who worked as a pioneer amongst the Adivasis of Upper Assam and latter was the first Bishop of the diocese of Dibrugarh. There are 8 rooms, each measuring 25 feet long and 14 feet broad, where 6 students have their place for study and sleeping. Up to the year 2007, there were 32 students. But on account of great demand for hostel accommodation, the number of seats was increased to 48 in the year 2008. This year there are 44. There is also a room measuring 30 feet by 25 feet which is used for various purposes like meetings, recreation, reading room, music room, T.V. room etc.

Then there is place for visitors and a room measuring 14 feet by 10 feet which is used as library and computer room. Moreover there is a room measuring 30 feet by 25 feet used for God experience. Furthermore there is the common toilet and bathing room used by all the hosteller. Kitchen has been recently made where cooking is done by all the hostellers, individually. The existing hostel is just too much crowded.

The Situation in the coming years:

The demand for hostel accommodation in the coming years is only going to increase because there is an increase in the number of Adivasi students passing the Matric Exam. Secondly the educational institutions in Dibrugarh are on the increase too, where the students can find seats for studying.

Our Proposal:

To construct a building measuring 100 feet by 30 feet, in line with the existing toilet block. Of this 20 feet will go for stair case on both sides of the building. In the ground floor 20 feet will be utilized for cooking purpose, another 30 feet will be a hall for eating and recreation purposes and the rest of the 30 feet will be used for Library, consultation, meetings and animation programmes. In the first floor, 80 feet will be divided  into rooms of 20 feet long and 22 feet broad with 8 feet verandah.

The foundation of the building could be for 3 floors, with tin roof.

Conclusion:

Once the capacity of the hostel is increased by building the extension, there will be 100 students coming from labour communities of Assam Tea gardens will be greatly assisted in the field of education. The students pay Rs. 200/- ( two hundred only) as their hostel fees. This amount is very affordable and thus assist the students from low income group. The other hostels in the town of Dibrugarh charge Rs. 1500/- to Rs.2000/-, which adivasi students cannot afford.
